What is an electronic signature?
It is a process that ties together a document, an identified signer and a trace of their consent. In practice, your customer receives a secure link, reviews the documents, ticks whatever you ask them to accept, then signs with a finger or a mouse.
At the moment of signing, the platform records the signer's declared identity (name, email, phone), the date and time, the IP address, and the full history of actions: sending, link opened, each document reviewed, boxes ticked, files uploaded. That whole record — not just the signature image — is what gives the process its weight.
Which documents should you have signed?
Anything that commits your customer: short-term rental agreement, vehicle or equipment rental contract, check-in and check-out inventory reports, house rules, liability waiver, cancellation terms, quote or purchase order.
You can gather several documents in a single request, and require some of them to actually be opened before signing is possible. A sensitive clause — excess, pets, no parties, returning the vehicle with a full tank — can be isolated into its own checkbox, so nobody can later claim they never saw it.
What is its legal value?
Under French law, an electronic document carries the same evidential weight as paper as long as its author can be identified and its integrity guaranteed (article 1366 and following of the Civil Code). The European eIDAS regulation recognises three levels of signature: simple, advanced and qualified.
